Project Spotlight: Brooks HOA, UT
When it comes to drainage infrastructure, what happens underground is often out of sight and out of mind until a problem becomes impossible to ignore. That was the situation for our client at Brooks HOA in Utah, a connection made during our Treo Lunch and Learn. After learning more about our Utah pipe rehabilitation capabilities, they reached out with a persistent blockage issue affecting drainage on their property.
What we uncovered underground was significant, even for our experienced team.
The Challenge: A Storm Drain Pipe Overtaken by Roots
During the initial inspection, our team identified severe root intrusion inside the storm drain pipe running from the catch basin to the nearby creek. The affected section was estimated at approximately 25 feet, but based on the density and compaction of roots, the intrusion had likely been developing for many years.
Once onsite, our suspicions were confirmed.
We extracted a single root mass that was nearly 25 feet long. In addition, we removed a large amount of smaller roots, organic debris, and accumulated material that was restricting flow inside the pipe.
Root intrusions of this size do not appear quickly. They are the result of long term infiltration, gradual buildup, and unchecked growth that can eventually compromise the structure of the pipe.
Why Root Intrusion Matters
Roots infiltrate storm drain systems through small cracks or joints in search of moisture. Over time they:
Reduce hydraulic capacity
Cause blockages and backups
Increase localized flooding risk
Create long term structural damage
Lead to expensive pipe replacement if left unaddressed
Many contractors immediately recommend excavation. This often means tearing up asphalt, removing landscaping, and replacing entire sections of pipe. While sometimes necessary, it is costly, invasive, and disruptive to the property.
Our Solution: No Dig Root Removal and Pipeline Restoration
The customer had already received a much higher priced proposal recommending full pipe replacement. However, our team recognized an opportunity to restore the pipe without excavation.
Using specialized equipment and technical root removal tools, our Utah crew:
Cleared the root intrusion from end to end
Restored flow from the catch basin to the creek
Avoided excavation and ground disturbance
Preserved the surrounding asphalt and landscaping
Delivered a cost effective alternative to full replacement
The result was a fully restored storm drain line at a fraction of the cost of replacement, and without any surface disruption.
The Value Delivered
✔ Significant cost savings compared to replacement
✔ No disturbance to asphalt, landscaping, or daily operations
✔ Infrastructure preserved rather than replaced
✔ Restored hydraulic performance of the storm drain system
✔ Fast turnaround with minimal downtime
✔ Long term protection through complete removal of invasive root systems
This project is a strong example of why proper inspection and non destructive solutions matter. Not every compromised pipe needs to be replaced. Often the most effective approach is to restore what is already in place.
