Project Spotlight: Drywell Installation for Retention Basin in Homestead, Maricopa

At StormWater Pros, LLC, we were recently called to the Homestead community in Maricopa to address concerns over a retention basin that was no longer draining properly. This issue was more than just an eyesore—the standing water was causing discoloration, damaging grass, and posing health and safety risks such as increased mosquito activity, foul odors, and even the potential for drowning.

The Problem: Standing Water in Retention Basins

Retention basins play a crucial role in stormwater management, but when they fail to drain, stagnant water can cause a range of problems. In this situation, the basin's surface had become oversaturated, and the underlying layers of heavy clay and sand were obstructing proper drainage. As these layers became waterlogged, the stormwater was left with nowhere to go, leading to persistent pooling.

Our Solution: Installing a New PureWell™ Drywell

After visiting the site and consulting with the Homestead team, we determined that the best solution was to install a new PureWell™ Single Chamber Drywell. Unlike surface-based drainage methods, a drywell works below ground to collect and filter stormwater. The filtered water is then safely returned to the aquifer, free of pollutants, which helps sustain clean groundwater for the community.

While the PureWell™ Drywell has a small surface footprint, it extends deep into the ground, breaking through the heavy clay and sand layers that were impeding drainage. This allows the drywell to efficiently handle the large volumes of stormwater that occur frequently during our Valley's monsoon season.

The Results: A Healthy Retention Basin

So check out that brand new PureWell™ Single Chamber Drywell! While the after photos show the area directly after construction, the retention basin is now prepared for landscaping and restoration. The new drywell ensures that stormwater will be properly managed, allowing the community to regrow the area and bring it back to its original beauty. With the drainage issues resolved, the basin will remain dry and safe, ready to support a healthy, vibrant space for the community to enjoy once fully restored.
